📊 Did you know? Tender84 tracks 75,000+ active GeM listings. GeM is now mandatory for most central government ministries and PSUs — if you're not on GeM, you're missing the largest government buyer base in India.
The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is an online procurement platform launched by the Ministry of Commerce in 2016. It's a single, unified marketplace where:
Government buyers (ministries, PSUs, state departments) purchase products and services directly
Registered sellers list their products with prices and specifications
Transactions are fully digital — from order to payment
GeM now processes lakhs of orders annually and is the default procurement channel for most central government purchases. The official portal is gem.gov.in.
2. Why Register on GeM?
🇮🇳 Pan-India Reach Sell to government buyers across all states and union territories — no marketing needed.
⚡ Direct Orders For items under ₹25,000, buyers can purchase directly without bidding — instant government sales.
💰 Faster Payments GeM Pool Account ensures payments within 10-30 days — significantly faster than traditional tendering (30-90 days).
🏛️ Government Mandate Many central ministries and PSUs are required to procure from GeM. Not being on GeM means missing mandatory buyers.
🔍 Transparent Pricing All prices are visible — buyers compare and choose. Fair competition, no hidden negotiations.
🔄 One-Time Registration Register once, sell to all government departments. No portal-by-portal registration like traditional tenders.
3. How to Register as a Seller on GeM — Step by Step
Step 1: Prepare Prerequisites
Aadhaar-linked mobile number (for OTP verification)
PAN Card (in the name of business/individual)
GST Registration Certificate (mandatory for all sellers)
Active bank account (for GeM Pool Account settlement)
Udyam/MSME Certificate (optional but recommended — enables MSME benefits)
Valid Class 3 DSC (Digital Signature Certificate) — see our DSC guide
Step 2: Create Account on gem.gov.in
Visit gem.gov.in → Click "Register" → Select "Seller" → Enter your Aadhaar-linked mobile number → Verify OTP → Fill business details (PAN, GSTIN, bank account) → Upload required documents.
Step 3: Pay Registration Fee
GeM registration is not free. Fee depends on your turnover — see fee structure below. Payment is online via the portal. Once paid, your seller profile is activated (typically 2-5 working days for verification).
Step 4: Create Your Seller Profile & List Products
After activation, log in and complete your profile: add business details, delivery locations (districts you can serve), and list your products/services with images, specifications, and pricing. Each product goes through a quality review by GeM before going live (usually 2-3 days).

5. Product Listing & Pricing Strategy
On GeM, your product listing IS your bid. There's no separate tender document. Key tips:
Match GeM categories exactly: Select the correct product category and sub-category. Wrong categorisation = zero visibility.
Complete specifications: Fill all technical specs, dimensions, warranty info, and compliance certificates. Incomplete listings get rejected.
Competitive pricing: Your price is visible to all buyers. Research existing listings before setting your price. Undercut by 5-10% initially to get first orders and reviews.
High-quality images: Products with clear images get 3x more orders. Use white background, show the actual product.
Delivery reach: Mark all districts and states you can deliver to. More coverage = more order opportunities.
OEM/Authorised dealer: Upload OEM authorisation or dealership certificate if you're an authorised seller — gives you preference in L1 comparisons.

8. Tips for GeM Success
📸 Invest in product photography: Listings with 3+ clear images get 3x more orders. Show the actual product, not a stock photo.
📦 Start with small orders: Accept low-value direct purchases to build your rating and order history. Buyers trust sellers with proven track records.
🏷️ Price competitively: Your price is public. Check competitor listings before setting yours. A 5% lower price can win you 80% of L1 comparisons.
🚚 Expand delivery coverage: Mark as many districts as you can realistically serve. A buyer in a remote district with only 2 sellers will choose you if you're available.
📋 Keep documents ready: OEM certificates, MSME certificate, ISO certifications — upload everything to your GeM profile. It speeds up order verification.
